Kinabalu Park is the primary gateway to climb
Mount Kinabalu, located about 90km east of KK City in
Kundasang Valley. A Sabah national park since 1964, it was also the first World Heritage Site in Malaysia designated by UNESCO (2000) for its incredible ecological diversity that represents many endemic species in Borneo. From KK, visitors travel north towards
Tuaran and exit at
Tamparuli on the east coast highway. From here, it's a straight road up steep and undulating slopes until the park entrance appears at left, about 5km before Kundasang town or 20km from
Ranau. A small entrance fee is levied on visitors - this ticket also grants access to
Poring and
Mesilau for the same day.
