Kampung Sumangkap is a village in Matunggong, about 40km south of Kudat or 100km north of KK after Kota Marudu. Famed for the gong-making skills throughout Sabah, the Rungus people that lived here have turned their village into a factory producing this cymbal-like instrument. A small ticket fee allows visitors to explore this tourist attraction.
Here, they can explore the huts of different gongsmiths as they work on beating, grinding and knocking their metal discs to perfect pitch. Visitors can also purchase gongs of various sizes, ranging from toy-like souvenir gongs to full-sized ceremonial gongs used for important events in native customs. A giant-sized replica sits on a field as a monument.
